Lady Bulldogs overpower Lady Eagles, grab solo lead

National University Lady Bulldogs finally ended a long six-game losing skid against Ateneo Lady Eagles with a neck-to-neck scores of 25-17, 25-13, 19-25, 29-27 victory to grab the solo lead in the UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball tournament at the San Juan Arena yesterday.

The game somehow reminded of the UAAP Season 76, when the team was unstoppable lead by Myla Pablo, Jen Reyes, and Aiko Urdas.

The 6-foot-5 Jaja Santiago led the Lady Bulldogs with 26 points from 19 spikes, 6 points from team’s 14 blocks and 1 service ace, which moved the NU to 2nd straight victory and the solo lead.

It is a notable fact that ever since head coach Roger Gorayeb came into the program, the Lady Bulldogs have won against every team except the Ateneo in the UAAP.

“We will try to win as many games as possible,” said NU coach Roger Gorayeb.

Ateneo dropped the first 2 rounds, but quickly found in-line with Bea De Leon and Jhoana Maraguinot leading the charge. The momentum just repulsed over Lady Eagles’ side as they notched a 12-4 lead in the 4th quarter.

However, Santiago, Jorelle Singh, and Risa Sato collectively pushed National University to overcome the tough Ateneo attack late in the game.

The victory gave the Lady Bulldogs to experience the top spot in the placing, while the Lady Eagles dropped to 1-1.

Jorelle Singh had five service aces for a 16-point effort while Risa Sato tallied four blocks to finish with 12 markers for the Lady Bulldogs.

For Lady Eagles, it was De Leon who paced the team with 14 points, while Maraguinot added 12 points to the loss.

NU will next take on Adamson Lady Falcons on 12th of February at the same venue, the FilOil Flying V Centre.
