Lady Eagles defeat Lady Tams in 5-set thriller

 

The Ateneo Lady Eagles are slowly catching up in the league by winning a tough 2nd game against Far Eastern University, 25-19, 24-26, 19-25, 25-16, 15-11, on Sunday 12th February in the UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball tournament Sunday at Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

With this win the Lady Eagles moved to 2-1, while the Lady Tamaraws dropped to 1-2.

The Lady Eagles had much difficulties while entering the faceoff with Tams, the team captain Jia Morado fell sick, head coach Tai Bundit was off to Thailand, while Assistant Coach Sherwin Meneses was in charge of the match. Despite such issues the Lady Eagles started the first set smooth by defeating FEU by a score of 25-19.

The 2nd set brought much more difficulties for the Lady Eagles, while Lady Tams pulled away to win 24-26. The Lady Tams displayed a tremendous game play even in the 3rd set, which raced off to an early 2-0 lead before entering 4th set. Finally, Ateneo was at match point after an FEU error, 14-11, before Kim Gequillana finished it off with a service ace.

Assistant coach Sherwin Meneses, said

“I told them what coach Tai has always said that the fifth set will come down to whoever executes the basic principles better,”

“Everything starts from the basic.”

In the beginning for 4th set, Ateneo was down. 5-0, however the Lady Eagles stabled with an 8-1 spurt to set and 8-6 lead in their offensive track.

Jhoana Maraguinot and Mich Morente led Ateneo with 18 and 17 points, each, but also drove help from Bea De Leon and Maddie Madayag, who combined for 21 points.

Gequillana added nine points off the bench.

Bernadeth Pons led FEU with 18 points.
