Salado leads Arellano for 1st win, downs Mapua

The Arellano University Chiefs are no more the same team that drove runner-up trophy home for past three seasons. Especially, when the team is loaded with the powerhouse Kent Salado, there is no looking back for Chiefs.

The Arellano displayed their dominance late in the game to snatch 91-82 victory against Mapua University Cardinals and kick start its winning streak in the NCAA Season 93 Men’s basketball tournament campaign at Malls of Asia Arena.

Kent Salado took charge of the lead by hitting 24 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists against Mapua squad that played without the Allwell Oraeme.

This was a tough challenge for the Chiefs, just when lead player Jio Jalalon is no more playing for Arellano.

Coach Jerry Codiñera after the encounter said –

“Every year, that’s always the case, that we want to win the championship,”

“We want to make it to the Final Four and we want to continue to do better every game in spite of the fact that year-in and year-out, there are players who leave the team. We continue to recruit and do well.”

Salado was supported by Michael Cañete with a double-double with 17 markers and 12 boards, also Brylle Meca added nine points and four rebounds off the bench.

“The win tastes so sweet,” “It’s hard to get the first game because there’s always jitters. Everything is new. They can feel the pressure, so I’m glad that we’re able to pull this off.” Jerry Codiñera added.

Laurenz Victoria led the Cardinals with 23 points and five rebounds, but committed six turnovers in the game.

In the next meet, Arellano will face the San Sebastian Golden Stags on Thursday 13th July, while Mapua will take on Letran Knights on Tuesday, July 11th at 4:00 PM.
