3-point barrage in Ginebra’s win surprised Aguilar

Christmas Eve came as a surprised for Japeth Aguilar, who went crazy from three, firing perfect 5-of-5 clip for a career-high score of 32 points leading Ginebra with 89-79 win over Star in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Philippine Arena here.

Japeth Aguilar, a career 23% shooter from rainbow country after the win said –

“This is one of those moments in my basketball career that I never expected,”

“At first I was hesitant to shoot a three-pointer, but when I took the first shot, it went in and I was happy.”

While Aguilar was only following what Coach Tim Cone had thought to take charge and be Ginebra’s anchor on the defensive side, this mind-blowing shooting came as a surprise to him. Cone on the other side said that from the start, Aguilar had a green light to shoot and stop Star’s defensive holes.

“I was surprised with my offensive performance because my focus was to be honest was on defense, which was what coach Tim wanted to come from me. If you ask him, he has seven fundamentals on defense and he wants me to be an anchor on defense,” he said.

Not totally his aim, Aguilar does cherish his offensive part which he says is something that will remain with him for quite some time.

Joe Devance was the only other King who put in a double-digit output with 17 as Ginebra made it three in a row in their keenly followed match-ups with Star.
