Wright explodes 22, Phoenix edges out Meralco


The shorthanded Phoenix Petroleum surprisingly rose after two loses in PBA notching 94-90 victory over Meralco Bolts yesterday in the PBA Philippine Cup league at the Filoil Flying V The Arena in San Juan City.

Rookie Matthew Wright delivered the much-required points for Fuel Masters, scoring only 5 in first three quarters, but Wright played hottest of all exploding 17 in the fourth quarter single-handedly to edge out Bolts. His career high 22 score came from 7-of-11 shooting from the field, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 steals.

The win improved Fuel masters from double digit deficits to come back to .500 marking for the PBA Cup. Most notably Wright spotted three free throws within 27 seconds to save the lead and win.

In the end of first period, Phoenix remained ahead of Meralco, 22-19, which soon got narrowed to 45-44 in the solitary point at halftime. Phoenix struggled in the third quarter on the offensive side, which resulted in 75-65 (Bolts-Fuel Masters) at the end of it.

However, the team opened strong in the final canto, claiming 76 in the first four minutes of fourth quarter. Meralco’s Rookie Jonathan Grey was tough to handle for Fuel Master as the team edge with 1.25 left and went on to complete a game-high score of 24 off the bench.

Phoenix coach Ariel Vanguardia in a statement said –

“I am just relieved. We lost the last two games by an average of 31 points. It’s like sleepless nights for all of us. At the halfway point, we’re 2-3, and we’re not out. On our sixth game, I told them let’s just start 0-0,”

“This arena brings back a lot of memories… maraming laban ang naipanalo rito.”

Meralco dropped to 2-3 slate in PBA 2016.
