Abueva, Manuel help Alaska blowout Stars in OT


The New Year came as surprise for fans that experienced Alaska to go on overtime for the first time this season with Calvin Abueva to fend off Star 97-90 on Wednesday night in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

The Alaska Aces wasted a double-digit lead in regulation, before re-energized their shots in overtime to pull off the tough victory.

Calvin Abueva and Vic Manuel combined for 48 points and 17 rebounds for Aces to bring back the lead with biggest plays down the stretch as they passed a tie with the Hotshots, improving to the record 4-3 win-loss.

Compton, head coach Alaska said –

You can’t take away all their (Star) threats. They’re too good. I’m just so happy to escape with a win against a team that is that good,”

Happy about Tony dela Cruz and Jaypee Mendonza’s performance Compton added

“Calvin and Vic were the obvious heroes in this game. Their energy carried us and they were tremendous,”

In the meantime, Hotshots fell below .500 at 3-4 after their comeback remained short.

The Aces squandered a 9-point lead, 83-74, they made with 5.55 remaining in regulation as the Hotshots ended the 4th quarter on a 12.3 run capped by a 3-pointer by Allein Maliksi, which pushed the game into OT, 86-all with just 1.21 left.

Abueva smashed 10 points in the 4th quarter and OT, comprising a shot underneath off a turnover that closed 93-89 with 1.09 left in extra period.

Abueva finished at 23 points, 9 rebounds and 4 steals while Manuel added 25 points and 8 rebounds.
