Chris Froome climbs atop overall standings in Vuelta a España, stage 3 results

The four-time Tour de France winner Chris Froome raced the finish line in third place of the mountainous third stage of the Vuelta a España without knowing that he would be on top of the individual overall standings.

Italian Vincenzo Nibali won the stage after pedalling strong in the final 400m in the Pyrenees in Andorra. Nibali is one of the contenders of the race. Also, Nibali won the Vuelta in 2010. Nibali is currently fifth in the standings but with only 10 seconds behind Froome.

Meanwhile, Froome is looking for a historic title of winning Tour De France and Vuelta at the same year. Froome steadily attacked in the final climbed with his teammate Gianni Moscon. Froome gained leverage but he was caught on going down.

With the performance, Froome finds himself leading the race in the general classification. David Dela Cruz, Nicolas Roche and Tejay Van Garderen are just seconds behind.

“It’s a great surprise but I think it’s the result of a lot of hard work today from my team mates as well,” Froome said. “They did a fantastic job on the final climb, especially a guy like Gianni Moscon – it’s his first Grand Tour with Team Sky. He was great today, as were the rest of the guys.”

Stage 4 will move into Spain in a 198.2 km from Escaldes-Engordany in Andorra to Tarragona, Catalonia.

While Froome remains to be the favorite, Romain Bardet, Fabio Aru and Adam Yates who finished on the Top 10 of the Tour De France are some of his competitors.
