Chris Froome wins Stage 9, increases lead in La Vuelta

Chris Froome displayed his mountaintop power when he raced to the finish to win the Stage 9 of Vuelta a Espana on Sunday. Froome also increased his lead by gaining 10 seconds bonus for finishing first.

With the victory, Froome currently has 36 seconds ahead of his nearest rivel Colombian Esteban Chaves, who crossed the line second, and couldn’t keep up with the Team Sky leader.

Canadian Michael Woods finished the stage third and he gained seconds against some of the Top 10 in the general classification overall standings. Wilco Keldermand and Ilnur Zakarin were time at the same time as they crossed the finish line.

Alberto Contador was in the third group with David De La Cruz and Sam Oomen. They were 12 seconds behind Froome. Also, Vincenzo Nibala and Nicolas Roched finished 14 seconds behind.

With a strong Team Sky, Froome was able to connect with the breakway a the foot of Cumbre del Sol. Froome pedalled with speed against his opponents in the final kilometers as they couldn’t stay with him. Chaves and Woods were able to follow but they ran couldn’t match the power of Froome.
