Ginebra dominates Meralco in Game 1

Ginebra defeated Meralco, 102-87,in Game One of the PBA Governors’ Cup Finals on Friday at Quezon Convention Center.

With the height advantage, the Gin Kings pounded the ball inside then kicked out the ball to find open mens. Justin Brownlee scored 32 points to lead Ginebra in exploiting the inside. Brownlee also grabbed 19 rebounds and posted six assists.

To control the game, Japeth Aguilar scored 15 points while center Greg Slaughter added 14 points and eight rebounds. Kevin Ferrer has 11 points while LA Tenorio added 10 points to complete the picture of dominance for the Gin Kings.

The Bolts cut the deficit into four, 75-71, in the third quarter but the Gin Kings delivered the blow by increasing their lead into 21 points, 96-75.

Allen Durham posted 27 points, 14 rebounds and eight assists to lead the Meralco Bolts. Baser Amer had 14 points and five rebounds in a losing cause.

“We hit our shots and they were 2-of-17 from the three-point line in the first half. They’re the number one three-point shooting team and it was an unusual night for them. Let’s give credit to our defense, but they really missed a lot of three-pointers. They’re unfamiliar with the court and the rings and whatever plays into that, but on the other end, we did hit our shots,” Ginebra coach Tim Cone said.

Ginebra utilized its height strength to neutralize the defense of Meralco.
